Gyooganji, Gyōganji 行元寺 Gyogan-Ji Gotanda

4-9-10) / Tokyo Shinagawa ward Gotanda

The main statue is Senju Kannon

Shofuku Kannon

- quote -
Temple legend states that during the early 17th century, Ii Naotaka (then the second lord of the Omi-Hikone Domain) escaped from being caught in a sudden thunderstorm after having been invited inside the temple by a cat that lived there.
To show his gratitude to the cat, Naotaka decided to dedicate the temple to the Ii clan.
After Naotaka passed away, the temple was renamed to Gotokuji, from his posthumous Buddhist name
“Kyushoin-den Gotokuten ei-daikoji.”
- source : livejapan.com/en... -

- quote -
While there are several legends about the origins of this manekineko cat charm, one of the widely known story regards Gotokuji as the place of origin. Legend holds that the maneki neko originated back in Edo period, when a feudal lord from Hikone (a city in present-day Shiga Prefecture) passed by a temple in Edo. There, he met a cat that beckoned him to come into the temple. The lord followed the cat and decided to stop by the temple; soon after, a thunderstorm came by. The lord, who took shelter at the temple, became thankful of the cat’s deed; eventually, he collected enough funds to rebuild and claim the temple as his family temple, which eventually became Gotokuji.
As time went on, people began to offer maneki neko figurines to the temple as a sign of gratitude when their wishes came true.

Gotokuji Temple, located in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo, is a Buddhist temple that is said to be the birthplace of the maneki-neko, or “luck-inviting cat figurine.” These small statues, which portray a cat sitting up and beckoning with its front paw, have become quite popular all over the world with cat-lovers. Although there are many different kinds of maneki-neko raising either their right or left paws,
Gotokuji Temple specializes in the right-pawed version of this good-luck symbol.

- quote -
Gyoranji is located in the mountain side of Tsuki no Misaki.
The name was chosen because the principal image is Gyoran Kanzeon Bosatsu (魚藍観世音菩薩), whose figure is a maiden with her hair tied in a Chinese style topknot (唐様).
The following is a Chinese tale of the time of the Tang dynasty.
The Buddha appeared in a beautiful maiden's figure, selling fish in a bamboo basket, and spread Buddhism.
The sculpture was made based on this story.
- source : wikipedia ... -

In 1652, the temple was moved to its present location at a slope, which then got the same name, 魚藍坂 Gyoranzaka.

The statue is in the 観音堂 Kannon-Do hall.
