This temple is the base camp, so to speak, for the Mountain Ascetics for Mount Akakurasan near Mount Iwakisan.

This Fudo has been fished out of the sea at Ajigasawa 鯵ヶ沢の海中

Ajigasawa, Aomori
a town located in Nishitsugaru District of Aomori Prefecture in the Tōhoku region of Japan.
- History -
The area around Ajigasawa was controlled by the Nambu clan of Morioka Domain during the Edo period. Oura Mitsunobu, the founder of the Tsugaru clan, settled in Tanesato (now part of Ajigasawa) in 1491, which developed into a port for the Tsugaru region.
Ajigasawa became a village in the Nishitsugaru District in 1889, and was elevated to town status on March 31, 1955, by annexing the neighboring villages of Akaishi, Nakamura, Narusawa and Maido.
Ajigasawa Beach is about a ten minute walk from the train station and has both grass and sand areas with an incredible view of the Sea of Japan.
Umi No Eki “Wando” is a collection of stores, much like a market, that sells local goods directly from the farmers and fishermen. The products sold here are all local, and very fresh.

The temple was built by Mano Kogorō　真野の長者　(Mano no Choja), a wealthy merchant from Bungo, 豊後国臼杵, Kyūshū, about 585. He built it to honor Jūichimen Kannon for saving him from shipwreck on a voyage to Osaka in the 6th century. When he washed ashore after the wreck, he saw a bright light on the mountain's peak and followed it. When he arrived, he found the statue of Jūichimen Kannon and founded the temple on the same spot. The temple holds a festival every year on March 17th in memory of Mano.

The hondō is considered a National Treasure and is constructed without the use of a single cleat of nail. Legend states that it was built in a single night. This temple has had the patronage of emperors since the time of Emperor Shōmu ）聖武天皇 (r. 725-749)

In the compound is the Hyakudo Ishi (One hundred times stone).
It is a large boulder with a hundred pieces of bamboo in a ring on its top. You take a piece of bamboo, walk with it to the hondō, and then return to the stone, praying continuously as you walk back and forth. After one hundred repetitions, the prayer is sure to be granted. This practice isn't limited to this temple, however. At numerous temples you will see henro pacing back and forth between the hondō and the daishidō while earnestly praying. At this temple they simply have the bamboo to help them keep track of their counting.

Whereas many temples have special fertility rites for those that want to become pregnant, henro come to this temple, pray, and leave needles if they don't want to have any more children. And, from this tradition, another interesting tradition has sprung up. Women who do want more children can now come to this temple and pick up those same needles that have been left and this, conversely, will help them have the children they want. And, to take the tradition one step further, some people believe that for those desiring to have a child, wearing underwear sewn with these needles will be particularly effective.

Frederick Starr says that there are 6 Kannon statues here which were given to the temple as gifts by six emperors. He also notes that each has been classified as a National Treasure.

青森県南津軽郡大鰐町大字蔵館字村岡１２ / Muraoka-12 Kuradate, Ōwani-machi, Minamitsugaru-gun, Aomori

It used to be called 阿闍羅山千坊 of temple 高伯寺 at Mount Ajarayama 阿闍羅山 near Owari Onsen Hot Spring.

It was founded as 高伯寺 in 741 on orders of 聖武天皇 Shomu Tenno as one of the 66 Kokubun-Ji 国分寺 (state temples) in Japan. It was also called
Daiankokuji 大安国寺 Daiankoku-Ji.

The temple was relocated at the top of mount Kamioka 神岡山 in 1191.
It is one of the three great 三諦圓融 / 三諦円融 Santai Ennyu (ennyu no santai) of the Tendai Mikyo Sect.
Ennyu (Perfect Harmony among All Things)

It was relocated to its present place in 1650, when the Dainichi Do Hall 大日堂 was erected.
In 1871 it was givne the name Daien-Ji 大圓寺 (from a temple in Hirozaki).

Like Temple 4, this temple is also called Dainichiji. It was founded by Kōbō Daishi in accordance with an oracle he received from Dainichi Nyorai while performing a goma ceremony here. Until its destruction by fire in the 16th century (probably the work of Chōsokabe and his men), it was associated with the Ichinomiya Shintō Shrine, across the street. The two were officially separated during the persecution of Buddhism at the beginning of the Meiji Period. The current restoration was built in the later part of the Meiji Period.

There are two statues of Dainichi here, one carved by Kōbō Daishi and the other carved by Gyōgi. The one by Gyōgi is housed in the shrine across the street.

Daizenji is located in Susaki City between Temples 36 and 37 on the way down to Cape Ashizuri from Kōchi City. It was founded by Kōbō Daishi. It is also the only temple that has Kōbō Daishi as the honzon in the Hondō.

A lot of the compound has been rebuilt. The Daishidō is new and has been relocated to the bottom of the hill. According to a new guidebook i have, there is now a monorail (looks like a cablecar though) that will take you to the Hondō and the Nōkyōjo,. If you choose to walk up the stairs to get there, it's an easy climb.

Descriptions of Fudo's physical appearance derive from such scriptural source as the Mahavairocana Tantra (Dainichikyō (『大日経』)) and its annotation.

The Teachings of the Mahavairocana Sutra

Shingon Buddhism takes the seven chapters of the Mahavairocana Sutra (Dainichi-kyo) as the basic sutra for propagation, and has spread the belief in it to people. Its fundamental doctrine is explained in the "Chapter on the Stages of the Mind" in the first chapter. At the beginning of that chapter, it says,

"How do we become enlightened?
It is by knowing our own mind as it truly is."

Human beings have the complete virtues of the Buddha in their own minds, and this mind that bears the virtues of the Buddha is called the mind that aspires to realize enlightenment. This is the first thing that must be understood.

The doctrines of Shingon Buddhism and the teachings of Kobo Daishi can be said to begin and end with the aspiration for the realization of enlightenment. The Mahavairocana Sutra is a sutra that explains the virtues of Mahavairocana Buddha, who is the source of life, and those virtues of the Buddha are expressed in the Sanskrit letter "A" (), which is pronounced "Ah". This letter A is the mind that aspires to be enlightened, and knowing one's own mind is to know one's own aspiration for the realization of enlightenment.

Kobo Daishi also said,

"The letter A is the mind that aspires to realize enlightenment."

The process by which one develops a single drop of the aspiration for the realization of enlightenment and becomes a buddha in this body is explained in the Mahavairocana Sutra in three phrases. The three phrases are as follows.

1. Make the aspiration for realizing enlightenment the cause;
2. Make great compassion the foundation of your actions;  - and
3. Perfect skillful means.

These phrases indicate the process for becoming a buddha in this body, and also clarify the content of that enlightenment.

First of all, raising the aspiration for the realization of enlightenment is the starting point for becoming a buddha.
Next, it says that it is to be nurtured by taking action only through the Buddha's ample compassion. Safeguarded by that compassion, we can move toward our objectives in all things, and even the attainment of enlightenment is through the power of the Buddha's great compassion.
The third phrase speaks of skillful means as the objective of perfection, and skillful means here refers to the skillful means for benefiting others.

These three phrases explain that we must thoroughly engage in the Bodhisattva practice of contributing to the welfare and benefit of the world until the end of our lives.

When we contemplate our own minds, bodies, and lives, we see that the doctrinal teachings of Shingon Buddhism from the beginning to the end explain the centrality of the aspiration for the realization of enlightenment and the unity of ourselves with the Buddha, and we come to understand the teaching of nonduality in which human beings are equal with and not distinct from the Buddha.

What the belief in "be kind to all life," means is that we know the dignity of our own lives, and can discover in our own existences the realization of enlightenment and the lifeforce of the Buddha.

The Mahāvairocana Tantra
(traditional Chinese: 大毘盧遮那成佛神變加持經; pinyin: Dà Pílúzhēnà Chéngfó Shénbiàn Jiāchí Jīng)
is an important Vajrayana Buddhist text. It is also known as the Mahāvairocana Abhisaṃbodhi Tantra, or more fully as the Mahāvairocana Abhisaṃbodhi Vikurvita Adhiṣṭhāna Tantra. In Tibet it is considered to be a member of the Carya class of tantras. In Japan where it is known as the Mahāvairocana Sūtra, it is one of two central texts in the Shingon school, along with the Vajrasekhara Sutra. Both are also part of the Tendai school.



Kūkai Kobo Daishi learned of the Mahāvairocana Tantra in 796, and travelled to China in 804 to receive instruction in it.

The Mahāvairocana Tantra consists of three primary mandalas corresponding to the body, speech and mind of Mahāvairocana, as well as preliminary practices and initiation rituals. According to Buddhaguhya’s Piṇḍārtha (a summary of the main points of the tantra) the Mahāvairocana Tantra system of practice is in three stages: preliminary, application, and accomplishment. Attached here and there are doctrinal passages, and sadhana practices which relate back to the main mandalas.

Chapter 2 of the sutra also contains four precepts, called the samaya, that form the basic precepts esoteric Buddhist practitioners must follow:

Not to abandon the true Dharma
Not to deviate from one's own enlightened mind
Not to be reserved in sharing with others the Buddhist teachings
Not to bring harm to any sentient beings

Shingon Lineage
The Mahavairocana Tantra does not trace its lineage to Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Instead it comes directly from Mahavairocana.

Ichijoji is a district in Sakyo ward of Kyoto, with many famous buildings.

A number of travellers visit this holy site of Haiku, a Japanese style poetry, annually around the world.

Historical back ground
In 864, An’e (An'ne 、安恵 / 安慧) , a monk, built Konpukuji, due to his master, Ennin’s dying wish. The temple was originally called Ryugean.

Tesshu 鉄舟, a Japanese monk, restored Konpukuji in the mid 18th century. It belongs to Nanzenji temple, a Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Matsuo Basho, a renowned Japanese Haiku master, frequently visited the temple and had enjoyed an intellectual and cultural exchanges with Tesshu.

Since Basho stayed at the thatched hat in the east side in the back of the garden, the place has been called Basho Hermitage (Basho-an).
The temple was then ruined later.
Yosa Buson, a renowned Japanese poet and Haiku master, restored the temple in 1776. Now it hosts a famous tea room.




After passing through a gate and turning to the left, visitors receive a spectacular view. Pass through a dry landscape garden on the left and a building. With a wonder and an expectation, take steps towards the hut by looking a dry landscape garden and a building on the left.

Green moss delicately cover a ground under the round topiaries. A sazanqua tree gorgeously fills up itself with blooming white flowers on the left under the hut. On May, azaleas put pinkish flowers on the topiaries.

The hut keeps a peaceful surroundings, sitting on hilltop, overlooking the city. Take a seat in the hut. Immerse yourself to be surrounded by beautifully tinged foliages with red, orange and yellow. Listen to the sounds of tossing foliages and feel milder lights under trees, forgetting about time.

Tesshu (円光寺の鉄舟和尚) was a good friend of Matsuo Basho.
Basho visited him frequently when he stayed in Kyoto.
Tesshu named an old hermitage in the compound after him, another Basho-An 芭蕉庵, which now has a beautiful curved thatched roof and a small tea room.

For the tea ceremony and haikai meetings with Yosa Buson, there were always just a few good friends invited, like Takai Kito 几董, 道立 and Hyakuchi 百池.

Teramura Hyakuchi 寺村百池 (1748 - 1836)
a great sponsor of Buson, who lived to the ripe age of 88. He had a silk and cloth store 糸物 in Kyoto, the Sakai-Ya 堺屋. His haikai name was Dairaidoo 大来堂 Dairaido.
Dairaido studied haikai with Buson, painting with Maruyama Ookyo 円山応挙 (1733 - 1795) and the tea ceremony with the 6th master of the Yabunouchi school 薮内流六代比老斎紹智
